Guardian Home Program
What is a Guardian Home Program
Becoming a Guardian gives you the opportunity to have one of our beautiful purebred border collies as a part of your family at no upfront cost to you.
Our guardian home program is where we place our future breeding dogs with local families to live in their forever homes whilst remaining a Comilo Collies breeding dog. We retain the breeding rights and ownership of the dog/s until he or she has retired from our breeding program. Once they are retired, full ownership is transferred to the guardian family and they get to keep their dog forever. Guardian families are allowed to visit their female and her puppies whilst they are staying with us.
By offering our guardian home program, we can ensure that our dogs get to live their best possible lives in a loving, caring home where they receive as much one-on-one attention as possible.
What expenses are the guardian families responsible for?
You will receive a top-quality dog that has been hand-picked by us to remain in our program at no initial cost.
Guardians are, however, responsible for all “regular” dog care including providing food, treats, toys, grooming, etc. They are also responsible for normal vet care that is not breeding-related, vaccinations, annual health checks, teeth cleaning, etc. The dog must be kept up to date on all vaccinations, worming, flea and tick treatments at their expense.
What are we, Comilo Collies, responsible for?
We will provide the guardian family with a healthy dog or puppy. We pay for all breeding-related health testing such as DNA profiling, PennHIP, and Eye certs.
We pay for all breeding-related expenses, progesterone testing, ultrasound scans, pregnancy x-rays, whelping, weaning, and raising puppies, etc. We teach the guardian family how to detect a heat cycle and how to care for a pregnant dog if they don’t already know.
Provide lifetime support for the families and the dog/s.
Once the dog has retired from the breeding program we will have them spayed/neutered, and full rights of ownership will be transferred to you including their microchip and council registrations.
And we are always willing to take the dog back if the guardian family can no longer care for them.
